An essential element of the Catholic liturgy is the proclamation of scripture. While the Gospel is always read by a Deacon or Priest, the Old and New Testament readings are proclaimed by a Minister of the Word. Training and ongoing formation is provided to all Ministers of the Word. Scheduling is by mass preference and may include weekdays, holy days, and special liturgies.
Ministers must:
possess a pleasant speaking voice
be able to gain and maintain the attention of the assembly, putting life into the written word
