Our patron is one of the three archangels mentioned in the Bible. By ancient tradition inherited from our Hebrew roots, we know that Angels and Archangels were at the bottom of the order of creatures in Heaven. The highest and closest to God were the Cherubim and Seraphim. It was one from these latter ranks, Lucifer, who figures so strongly in Michael’s story.
Raphael and Gabriel were healer and messenger, respectively. Michael was the fighter! When Lucifer was unwilling to accept God’s love for those LOWLY creatures—you and me, the human race—he revolted. God did not choose another Cherubim or Seraphim to oppose Lucifer, but turned to one of His lowliest servants, the Archangel Michael.
It should sound familiar to us that God would choose the lowliest of His servants. We certainly see that in God’s relationship with the human race. Jesus constantly reminds us of the importance of those who might seem the lowliest. Christ himself was born in humble surroundings.
God provided Michael with the armor and weapons that would defeat Satan. The armor and weapons were Mercy and Faithfulness, Compassion, and, of course, Love. These were the only weapons that would allow a lowly Archangel to be able to cast down the prideful Lucifer.
God still loved Lucifer and gave him a place to continue in existence. In Anger, Pride and Hate, Lucifer—now more properly known as Satan or the Devil—chose to make it what we call Hell. Jesus has called upon us to use the same weapons Michael did. Let us follow our Lord Jesus and honor our Patron!
