I have been extraordinarily blessed in my life. The “work” I have done, especially teaching, practicing law, and priesthood, have been a joy in my life and outrageously rewarding. It is not that it has always been easy. And there have been what I call “wooden nickel days”—days when I say jokingly that I might have given away the job for a “wooden nickel.” But I have overwhelmingly enjoyed my labors!
This weekend we have a holiday attached on Monday that celebrates labor. The Bible, from the very beginning, extols work—God sees the work of creation and sees it is good (Genesis 1). On the seventh day, God rests from this work to enjoy it. Our work is intended to enrich our lives, giving purpose and providing a livelihood. That laborers should be paid a fair wage for their work is found in the Old Testament (e.g. Deuteronomy 24:15) and the New (e.g. 1 Timothy 5:18).
I have always told young people to do what they love (and do it well), and the money will be enough. If you just go after the money, you will not be as happy, because there is never “enough.” It is the
labor that should bring joy. The monetary return will somehow work its way out. I have seen it work out even for couples (and families), as long as both agree on their priorities.
Anyway, we celebrate Labor Day this weekend declaring labor to be something that rewards us both individually and as a society. Have a great holiday!
