Holy Family Parish

Holy Family Parish was formed in 2010, bringing together the four churches across Tazewell and Buchanan Counties in Southwest Virginia:
 

• St. Joseph Parish | Grundy
• St. Mary Parish | Richlands
• St. Theresa Parish | Tazewell
• St. Elizabeth Parish | Pocahontas

These four different and distinct communities blend together into one holy family, under the care of a single priest, Fr. Renier Supranes, who travels roughly 96 miles (2.5 hours) one way to celebrate four Masses every weekend.

Interesting Fact: the state of Maryland is only 96 miles long

Our Connection to the Region

St. Michael Parish has a twinning relationship with the four parishes of Holy Family Parish.  Through the Appalachian Twinning Ministry (ATM), our parish supports low-income and poverty-level families in Southwest Virginia by pairing our resources with Holy Family Parish.  It is important to point out that ATM focuses on the specific needs of the broader Appalachian community, not just the needs within the parishes.  Leveraging our parish's resources (as well as several other local parishes) and the Holy Family parishioners' knowledge and community involvement, ATM works to identify and provide for these specific needs.

The Community

Center for Christian Action (CCA) | Pocahontas

The Center for Christian Action (CCA) is an ecumenical organization.  It is dedicated to improving the quality of life by serving and helping to meet the needs of those living in the community.  Through efforts in providing emergency assistance, teaching employable skills, and encouraging wellness and preventative health care—just by being there with a helping and when needed—CCA encourages folks to take control of their lives and to bring about wholesome change.

Teen Venture Center | Richlands

The Teen Venture Center serves the youth in the community. Their goal is to help teens break the cycle of alarming school dropout rates, alcohol and drug abuse, and the lack of youth involvement within the community.  Members include students who are in Grade 6 through age 20 and who are enrolled in middle school, high school, or college.  For the older members who choose not to attend college, they required to be employed by a local business, so that they are learning a skill and are contributing to our society in some way.  Volunteers create an environment of formal growth and dynamic experience—the kind that most youth in a small region oftentimes lack—by providing programs in art, rock climbing, skate tutorials, and computer programming.
