Hear from Father Nova on what the St. Jean Baptiste Healthcare Clinic means for his people
The need for quality healthcare is as critical in Haiti as it is in our own community. In 2013, the decision was made for the Haiti Twinning Ministry to provide funds to build the St. Jean Baptiste (SJB) Healthcare Clinic in the village of Dos Palais. For the past 10 years, this clinic has been providing much needed healthcare for the people of Dos Palais and the surrounding villages. The SJB Clinic has become a preferred option given its reputation for full-offerings (doctors, labs, and pharmacy), personalized service, efficiency, and cleanliness.
In addition to the medical staff, the clinic has a lab and pharmacy to assist in diagnosing and treating a multitude of ailments. Due to the level of care provided by the staff at the SJB Healthcare Clinic, and the current unrest in the larger cities of Haiti, more villagers than ever are utilizing the clinic. In 2023, the clinic treated 2,340 people, ran 4,259 lab tests, and made 60 different diagnoses. The clinic usage has more than doubled over the last three years, and 2024 is on track to further exceed 2023's usage.
In addition to sick visits, there are numerous injuries treated, and on average, 20 pregnant women being followed through maternity in the clinic at any given time. In 2023, there were 86 prenatal visits, 13 births, and 109 postpartum visits that took place in the clinic.
The original plan for funding the operations of the clinic was to secure a healthcare partner (Miserior, a German charity that funded grants to health care facilities in third world countries), which did not occur. As a result, the Haiti Twinning Ministry has been funding the clinic (now ~$50,000 a year) from savings which has been depleted. The Twinning Ministry is looking into possible Grants, Rummage Sale Business Sponsors, and other means of potential ongoing funding. In the meantime, with the rising costs of supplies and increased demand, we are in need of assistance to “keep the doors” of the clinic open and allow the staff to provide critical medical attention to those who are in need. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this current need!
