"Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry." (Matthew 4:1-2)
Lent helps us understand that Jesus faced the same temptations we do today. The forty days of Lent each year remind us of our need to fast from that which causes us harm and tempts us to separate from the love of God. Jesus knew he had to go through the desert. So do we! The hunger that Lent awakens in us brings us back into the loving embrace of the Lord, our life, and our community.
May these forty days in the desert serve to bring us closer to the Spirit of Life that dwells among us and to the hope of Easter and its many blessings.
Prepare for Lent
Lenten Regulations
Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and the catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism at Easter.
This Lenten season, take the opportunity to repent and turn back. Learn the value of forgiveness, both given and received. Reconciliation offers hope and a new start.
The early Christians in Jerusalem would walk the same pathway that Jesus walked, pausing for reflection and prayer.

Religious significance for each item in the baskets: eggs (hope and resurrection); bread (Christ); sausage (God's favor and generosity); horseradish and vinegar (bitterness and suffering of Christ); and small lamb made of butter (Jesus, our Paschal Lamb).
