We have come to John for cleansing Bringing our wrongs and our wounds Into the depth of this flowing water To reveal our flaws and our sins And purify both son and daughter
And so, this prophet calls us forth From the darkness of our souls To face and to release our heavy yolk Plunging down into the depths From there, rising again to new hope
Yet this Baptist in faith now cries out There is One here who now comes Of whose sandals he is unworthy to loose One who will baptize beyond word Who bears all forgiveness and truth
For we have come with our burdens To the waters of God’s love To wash our hearts and lift truth’s pall Rising now we are cleansed and new We follow this Jesus, this Messiah’s call
For this Holy One calls out all sinners Separating them from His Body But to be counted in his number I long And follow this Son of David from above Praying that with his flock I belong
To a new life of repentance and love We now leave this river behind To enter anew the wilderness of spirit Where we can see only him This Christ, this Messiah, this brother of John
Dear Jesus, lead me now Through this desert journey of my life To the river of your forgiveness Help me leave behind and follow you Away from sin to the path of grace With your blessing from above
