This gospel reflection is based on Luke 24:37-44.

I Knew Not

Oh now I have such deep regret
Over how I have lived and lost
How I have given up all goodness
And now pay the ultimate cost

I lament the sad arc of my life
Once so innocent and bright
Facing a future with such hope
Bright days now turned to night

Regret fills my heart as I suffer
For I have caused others such strife
By the wrong which has darkened me
And now has consumed my life

I sadly deserve this painful end
For all the pain I have caused
For those who sadly trusted me
Precious life is now my sin’s cost

So it all ends here and now this way
In so much pain and such regret
I fear the end on this sad, dark day
For neither I nor God my life can forget

Yet here this man, this Jesua, hangs too
He who spoke of God’s forgiving love
Never harming nor taking away
Always giving and healing with love

We knew we deserved our fate
When this dark day had once begun
My life’s regret is too deep to say
For I know what I have done

Yet I must rebuke the other’s anger
Who has sinned without regret
His loud taunting words of bitterness
For we deserve the fate we now get

Yet this Holy Jesua is not like us
And speaks out to my dying ears
This day you will be with me
And live beyond all my fears

Dear Jesus forgive me now
For all I have said and done
Wronging myself and others
Heal my wounds and save me
That with you forever I be one
