This gospel reflection is based on Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21.
Isn't This?
In our midst, a man who we know One who is only the carpenter’s son Of whom we’ve heard much and have seen The many wondrous things he has done
This man has read for us oft before Unrolling the ancient scroll of our past Of our history he has so boldly proclaimed Words of ancient prophets, first to last
Yet he reads again this carpenter’s son Who has grown among us into a man For so long mother’s helper and protector Now here in synagogue does stand
And what he says as he rolls the scroll And all has become quiet and still Stuns us and shocks us all today Challenges our minds and our will
Is he what he claims, this carpenter’s son As we have all been stunned to him say This boy grown to man before us all Proclaiming to be the One today
Yet here he does yet stand and boldly claim That all is fulfilled before our eyes In him, this new teacher among us As in angry lament the priests doth cry
If only this be true, to each other we say The One, the Lamb from prophecy has come The savior king so longed for by us all Oh that our rescue has now begun
Shall we believe as doubt rings aloud That all is fulfilled in this carpenter’s son Should we believe and follow what he says Or from this false prophet should we now run
Dear Jesus you have in truth proclaimed That all is fulfilled as you did say Help me to focus solely on you As in my doubt oft I turn away Help me believe in your love so true And follow you in truth this day
