We have given up all and followed From our homes and families apart Into places not previously known Among friends and strangers of heart Now in our pride we seek vain reward The kingdom of which he has spoken A place near him and his heavenly throne But in his reply our hearts have awoken
For his answer to us is shocking and strange Cups which we will and must all retain He tells of separation and loneliness He speaks of cups of suffering and pain
Can we drink this cup which soon will come Can we pass this test of faith and love Can we endure that of what he speaks Before we can enter his heaven above
It has become uncomfortably clear That our earthly desires are prideful and vain That what we ask can only be his will What we selfishly seek we shall not retain
Things of glory and honor are not of my doing But only his will and power can give Dreams of glory and authority are not the way But only by the will of God do we even live
Dear Jesus, Help us in our longing to be with you Show us that: In humility is greatness In giving we receive In loving we know love In mercy we find peace In surrender to your will We receive our eternal reward
