For times For of my life’s inner drought In fear I guard my heart’s wellhead In folly protecting its continued life flow To face inevitable dry times ahead
Of life’s hungers to come I dread Foolishly hoarding my sustenance For times of some shortage ahead Thinking to assure self-continuance
For times of unknown danger I build up higher my outer walls Thinking I alone can protect what I call mine Against times when danger calls
For the unknown advent of poverty I save up my perishable earthly treasure Trying to save what I think is my own Always in fear of losing all measure
Oh such folly as it all passes so quickly In a moment of not mine but his will Regardless of my longer-range plans In spite of my perceived careful skill
Yet what I should be storing up is grace Gathering much by sowing his love And so embracing his holy assurance That the only true plan is from above
For all I have here is truly passing All is like a feather in the wind For nothing of this world is mine But all is truly a gift from him
Help me Jesus To know that life’s only true value Is in embracing your eternal love And that life’s only true treasure Is in sharing your forgiving grace Encourage me and calm my fears That when I dread losing all I have Assure me that all is in your loving hands Help me to value the good and the true And always trust that all good things Are things which come from you
